Insurance Points

Dear Visitor: The purpose of this page is to update you on automobile insurance rates and traffic tickets.

NC Insurance Points, Rates and Traffic Tickets

All too frequently we hear of clients who receive minor traffic tickets and who simply mail in their money and ticket to the Clerk of Court. Later, these clients find that their auto insurance rates are dramatically increased for these minor violations. This is unfortunate since North Carolina law provides several insurance breaks which may diminish insurance rate increases.

The table that follows shows the dramatic increase in your car insurance rates as you accumulate insurance points in NC. These increases last for three years!

Insurance Points & Driver's License Points

Car insurance points are not the same as driver's license points. These two point scales are separate and different. In addition to what is shown, a simple ticket may allow your insurance company to place you in the Reinsurance Facility Pool; a group of drivers that the company decides are risky drivers.

Points & Surcharges

All drivers in this pool pay an additional amount called a 'surcharge' which varies each year depending on past insurance claims. In years past, this additional surcharge has varied from 9.9% to 16%. There is no substitute, insurance-wise, for a safe driving record. On the other hand, there is no justification to mail in your ticket and money and lose the insurance breaks the law provides.

Our firm can assist you in exercising your insurance rights. The legal fee will likely be far less than the insurance increases over its three year term!

We hope that this information assists you in protecting you and your family members from car insurance rate increases. If you have questions on insurance, call criminal defense attorney J. Randolph Ingram, II at 1-888-878-3070.
